Solheim Cup preview: meet Team Europe

The Solheim Cup kicks off tomorrow in Germany, at St Leon-Rot Golf Club. Last week, we introduced you to the golfers making up Team USA, so now it’s time to focus on their opponents in the prestigious event – Team Europe, who will be looking to retain the Cup they won two years ago in America.

History of the Contest

You have to go back to 1990 for the first Solheim Cup contest, which saw the USA team winning on home soil. Two years later, in Scotland, Team Europe answered back by getting their hands on the Cup.

Team USA holds an 8-5 overall lead since that first meeting, but Europe ended a run of three defeats in the biennial tournament with 2011's 15-13 victory in Ireland. Then, two years later, they made history by claiming an 18-10 win in Colorado, the first time ever to win in America.

It’s one thing winning the Cup, but quite another to hold onto it when a solid American team is gunning for revenge. It’s a good thing, then, that Team Europe has some fantastic golfers to engage in foursomes and singles matches across the weekend, led by captain Carin Koch.

The LPGA website has a host of fantastic videos diving into the Solheim Cup, and here’s another one of them. Let’s meet Team Europe:
