A HOVERING golf cart? Well, it is Back to the Future day…

Today is a very special day. The 21st of October 2015 – the day that Doc, Marty and Jennifer travel to in the second Back to the Future movie. And while (like most science fiction stories) the film did get a lot of stuff wrong about 2015, it also predicted quite a bit that turned out to be true.

Let’s take a quick look at some of its predictions about today’s world, before we get to Bubba Watson’s Doc-tastic futuristic venture of his own…

One of the first things that jumps to mind when you think of the second Back to the Future movie (apart from the DeLorean, of course) are the flying cars zooming around the future world.

We don’t have flying cars just yet, but what we do have is an increasing trend with wearable technology – not too dissimilar to the talking jacket Marty wore in the time-hopping movie.

Similarly, his self-tying shoes have also been hinted at: Nike have filed a patent for technology that could reproduce Marty’s famous kicks.

When you watch the film back, it’s fun to see what they got right and what they got wrong about 2015. And it makes you wonder what they would have shown if Marty was more of a golf fan.

A hovering golf cart probably wouldn’t be too far out of the question. And while we’re a LONG way off from some of the Back to the Future predictions, a golf hover cart is very much a reality – thanks to none other than Bubba Watson.

His Bubba Hover project has teamed up with Oakley to create a cart that can go right through a water hazard, rather than around it.

Chris Fitzgerald, a hovercraft expert, said: “Bubba’s idea was to see if we could incorporate a hovercraft principle – that is riding on a bubble of air – into the existing golf cart.”

How did it turn out?

Well, why don’t you take a look?
